Why the Butterfly?
Blue Marble Jubilee is embracing a “Save the Butterfly” theme for our 2019 event. The Western Monarch Butterfly is high on the endangered species list – with a 99.4% decline in numbers since the 1980s. Climate change, pesticides and habitat loss are the causes behind the dramatic decrease.
“Butterflies, of course, make the world a little more colorful and magical. But in addition, a large amount of butterflies in one area indicates a healthy ecosystem. They are food for other animals and they play a big role in pollinating flowers.” says Kathy Dotson, one the event’s organizers. “The Blue Marble Jubilee hopes to educate the community about the monarch’s plight and provide resources and tools to help save these beautiful creatures.”
Save the Butterfly! Much of our decor, activities, and crafts will have a butterfly theme. We hope you’ll learn more about the Western Monarch Butterfly and how to save this beautiful and magical endangered species. In the afternoon we’ll have a Magical Butterfly Parade! Be sure to bring musical instruments, costumes, wings, and whatever will help to brighten the day.
